Beirut: March of the Zapotec

Captivated by mournful horn sections, Zach Condon, aka Beirut, has sought inspiration in the Balkans, France and now Mexico, where a Oaxacan funeral band helped him record his third album. His wonderful debut, Gulag Orkestar, located joy and raw excitement amid the melancholy. On March of the Zapotec, the young New Mexican has lost not only that exuberance but also his ability to write mesmerising tunes. The same applies to the second half of these “two EPs in the shape of an album”, entitled Holland and recorded under the alias Realpeople, on which Condon indulges his love of weedy electropop: a real downer.
